Does leadership and management training need to be done in person or can it be as effective when done remotely? If you are planning an ongoing programme I believe that initial sessions should always be done in person. You have to create a sense of trust and safety for people to discuss very personal issues and situations and that happens more easily when we are face-to-face. Of course, there is value in delivering some sessions virtually, not least from a cost perspective, but if you want to create a trusted community and strong relationships amongst your leaders and managers that happens faster in person. We can sense when someone's words are incongruent, the mood in a room dips when people are tired and need a break, we are more aware of the quieter ones in a room. That's my experience but I'd love to hear other people's views on this - maybe the next generations of managers feel completely differently! Gen Y & Z live their lives online, they build relationships online faster and more easily, and they are able to pick up those emotional cues via the screen. Maybe they don't feel the same need to be in person.
